Blown-in vs Batt Insulation: Which Is Better?

If you’re thinking of installing new insulation to improve home energy efficiency, you’ve probably run into blown-in vs. batt insulation.

These two types of insulation serve very different purposes and work best in different installations.

Blown-in Insulation

What is blown-in insulation?

Blown-in insulation is exactly what it sounds like – insulation that is blown into the space with a machine. It can be made of several materials, including fiberglass, cellulose, and rock wool.

Blown-in insulation is professionally installed by contractors in attics, crawlspaces, other irregularly shaped spaces, and existing walls.

Best for:

Irregular shaped areas and attics with low ceilings that are hard to reach. Blown-in insulation can reach all areas, unlike batt insulation. It is ideal for adding insulation to areas with a lot of obstructions and cramped or oddly shaped spaces.

Other Pros:

  • Fiberglass loosefill insulation, like the ProCat® blown-in insulation Ferris Home Improvements uses, does not settle (unlike cellulose insulation). This ensures thermal performance over time.
  • ProCat® will not absorb moisture. The presence of moisture can lead to mold, fungi, and pest infestations.

Batt Insulation

Traditional batt insulation, the type that comes in large rolls, is commonly installed inside walls during construction. It is not recommended for attics or other hard-to-reach areas because it is hard to cut and install precisely. Blown-in insulation does a better job filling spaces like these, which makes for higher energy efficiency.

Best for:

Batt insulation is best used when insulating walls in new homes, before the drywall goes up. It works best in areas that are free of obstructions, like walls that do not have plumbing or wiring. Batt insulation can also be used in installations with standard stud and joist spacing where there aren’t a lot of obstructions.

Other Pros:

Can be done DIY.

Relatively inexpensive.
